The Legal Chapter is a group of legal professionals whose love of language and theatre inspires them to support the essential work of Queensland Theatre’s Play Commissioning Fund. The Fund supports playwrights and encourages the development of new, ground-breaking works of theatre that are uniquely Australian. Most recently, the Chapter supported the commissioning of a play about the murder of Nellie Duffy.  Legal Chapter performances and pre-show functions will take place on the following evenings in 2018.

The smash-hit stage adapatation of the classic Australian coming-of-age mystery.

In the sizzling summer of 1965, bookish 14 year-old Charlie Bucktin lives in a tiny, insignificant bush town where nothing happens.
Nothing, that is, until the town’s very own Huckleberry Finn – Jasper Jones (Shaka Cook) – stumbles upon a gruesome crime out by the dam. Who else would he call on for help but the sharpest kid around?

Play Commissioning Fund

Queensland Theatre’s Legal Chapter is proudly supporting playwriting in Queensland through the Play Commissioning Fund. Each year, an exciting new work is commissioned.

In 2015 the Legal Chapter supported commissioning a play about the infamous Nellie Duffy case - the 1908 murder of the housekeeper at Carpentaria Downs station. Station manager’s wife Fanny Wilson and Aboriginal station-hand Billy were charged with the murder, but the jury refused to convict Billy despite his “confession”. The trial failed, and the truth never surfaced.

In 2016, the Queensland Theatre Play Commissioning Fund will support a work about the intense and tumultuous relationship between Australian writer Charmian Clift (Mermaid Singing, Peel me a Lotus) and war correspondent/novelist George Johnston (My Brother Jack, Clean Straw for Nothing), often regarded as Australia’s Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald. The play will examine their time living on the Greek island of Hydra, their return to Australia and the relationship between life and art.

If you share our love or words and stories and wish to see vital new works on the stage, please donate to our Play Commissioning Fund. All donations to Queensland Theatre are tax deductible and make a direct impact on our ability to bring new work to life.
