Artistic Director

JA Qld Theatre 2024 Season Launch 158

A UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY TO JOIN QUEENSLAND THEATRE AS ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

Established in 1970 under the Queensland Theatre Company Act 1970 with a statutory responsibility to contribute to the cultural and social development of Queenslanders, Queensland Theatre has a proud history creating an extensive repertoire of classic, contemporary, international and Australian theatrical works.

Over five decades, nine Artistic Directors have contributed to the program and creative life of the company, including foundation Director Alan Edwards, Aubrey Mellor, Chris Johnson, Robyn Nevin, Michael Gow, Wesley Enoch, Sam Strong and Lee Lewis.

We seek a Artistic Director with a passion for creating compelling theatre experiences that inspire, entertain and challenge. Building on the Company’s strong foundation and history, a genuine commitment to Queensland artists and audiences, new work, education and First Nations creative practice is essential. This is especially important as we look towards the Brisbane 2032 Olympics and Paralympic Games and the opportunities they present.

Reporting to the Queensland Theatre Company Board through the Chief Executive, the Artistic Director is responsible for shaping and leading the artistic vision and annual artistic program, developing and delivering the objectives and values of the Company’s strategic plan. They will be a mature and collegial leader, with experience in managing and motivating creative teams of specialists to deliver, including nurturing emerging and established practitioners.

The Artistic Director works closely with the newly created position of Head of First Nations Theatre to build capacity and elevate First Nations storytelling and theatre making.

As a significant ambassador for Queensland Theatre, the Artistic Director will actively represent and engage with our vast community of stakeholders, including audiences, supporters, partners and artists, maintaining robust connections and knowledge within both Queensland and nationally.

This senior national role requires an extensive knowledge of the performing arts sector, theatre making and its major players. The successful candidate will be an accomplished director of theatre who can demonstrate a strong track record in delivering artistically and commercially successful programs, a commitment to realising contemporary Australian stories and collaboration through theatre and a clear vision and ambition to take Queensland Theatre into its next creative phase.
