Technical Masterclass: Sound Design with Mike Willmett

Sound design is often the part an audience never notices, until it is gone. It builds tension, marks time, fills a silence or breaks one, and shapes how a story lands without ever asking to be seen. In this Masterclass, Mike Willmett from Counterpilot shows you how.

Held in the Bille Brown Theatre during the season of Small Mouth Sounds, it is a rare chance to work in situ: Mike explains the choices behind the design, coaches you on technique and composition, and opens the floor for questions. You will have the opportunity to work with the equipment in the theatre, not just a description of it.

Mike is a sound designer and composer, and one third of Counterpilot, an award-winning collective of interdisciplinary artists based in Brisbane who create immersive arts experiences. He will be assisted by Front of House Sound Engineer Kat Kidney.

As part of the Masterclass, you will be invited to view the performance of Small Mouth Sounds that evening.

Numbers are limited to 20 participants.

What the Masterclass will explore

• What shapes the creative and technical process of sound design for live performance
• Technical literacy, dramatic realisation, and composition
• The relationship between sound and other technical design elements
• Applying a dramaturgical lens to the design process

Who it's for

All levels of skill, ages 18 and above.

If you already work in live sound, music or composition, this is a chance to encounter the processes and nuances of designing for live theatre. If you are an early career artist, maker or student, it is a chance to deepen your knowledge of the craft and see what the job actually involves.

Followed by the 6:30pm performance of Small Mouth Sounds (running time 1 hour 40 minutes).
