Designing Round The Twist The Musical
In creating the costumes, Designer Renée Mulder embarked on an imaginative journey, tapping into the essence of the Round the Twist universe while infusing it with new life. From research to countless sketches, and an array of fabric swatches, she details the intricate process in ensuring each piece not only aligned with the narrative but also enhanced the storytelling.
Ultimately, the mission was to strike a balance between the fantastical and the real, dressing each character in a way that feels true to the world we’ve created on stage. The Twist family embodies a relaxed, 90s-inspired vibe with a sprinkle of contemporary flair, their clothing reflects a grounded, everyday reality that connects with the audience (that is until they step into someone else’s shoes).
Port Niranda’s school kids presented another
layer of challenge and creativity. Each child’s
uniform was carefully considered to represent their
character’s identity, allowing their personalities to
shine through in the details, be it a quirky hat, a
patterned sock, or a splash of bold colour.

The Gribbles, with their over-the-top fashion sense, were a delightful contrast. Their costumes are deliberately extravagant, with bold patterns and sharp silhouettes that emphasise their larger-than-life presence. These designs serve to heighten their comedic and somewhat villainous personas, adding a visual punch to their on-stage antics.
Meanwhile, the supernatural characters swirl into existence with translucent fabrics, iridescent textures, and silhouettes that sway between whimsical and eerie. They’re designed to feel askew from reality, shimmering with an enchanting aura that invites curiosity.
Every stitch, every accessory, and every piece of fabric was chosen with the intention of paying homage to the beloved television series while creating a unique theatrical experience. It is my hope that these costumes will transport audiences, sparking imagination and delight as they step into the whimsical world we’ve lovingly brought to the stage.
