ALGORITHM
By Daniel Evans
Presented by the Young Artists’ Performance Ensemble
Everything comes back to numbers. Everything comes back to formulas.
Some things can’t be contained.
Algorithm is an up-to-the-minute dissection of love in the 21st century.
It gives a quick nod to where we are, before time-jumping at hyper-speed into a future of polished profile pics and personally identifiable private data markets. A future where everyone is for sale and ‘love at first sight’ will cost you extra. In this daisy-chain of fleeting encounters, technology evolves and humanity devolves as economy, ethics and intimacy are entangled in a Gordian knot. What is revealed is a new world where rewards are fleeting, punishment is public, and pizza delivery drivers have as much chance as any start-up founder!
This searing work, by award winning playwright Daniel Evans, looks at the formula behind 21st century connections and asks — when dating becomes a revenue stream driven by marketers, what happens to finding ‘the one’? Who creates the conditions of romance? How do we draw lines around our identity? If the rules of attraction are governed by an algorithm, then what happens to love?
