Think Wayne’s World meets Stranger Things.

Matthew Whittet’s School Dance is a hilarious, heartfelt, and totally ’80s coming-of-age story that embraces the best things about being weird and transports us to the awkward, electric, and unforgettable world of high school.

Three teenagers — Matt, Luke, and Jonathon — are the outsiders of their school. Invisible to the cool kids, terrified of bullies, and nursing giant crushes they’ll never admit to, they’re just trying to survive one big night: the school dance.

What starts as a painfully familiar teenage ordeal soon explodes into a surreal adventure where unicorns create portals, epic BMX rides provide more than mere exposition, and the ghosts of invisible teens haunt every mirror-ball spin.

With big hair, bigger emotions, and a soundtrack of iconic ’80s hits, School Dance is a wild, funny, and deeply relatable dive into what it means to want to be seen.

Queensland Theatre Company's Young Company is proudly supported by program partners Brisbane City Council, The Rekindle Foundation and Australian Communities Foundation, and our generous donors and supporters.
