Transitioning is universal; connection is optional.

Stella keeps losing things: her books, her car, her daughter. She writes post-it notes to help her remember but everything keeps wandering away. Her son, Kidd, is helping her transition from the family home into aged care. As he packs up her life, together, they unpack a lifetime of stories.

Wanderings is an intimate play about the things that matter most. It explores the challenges, demands and heart-opening opportunities of changing family dynamics and shifting identities through the eyes of a transgender son and his mother who is living with dementia.

When Stella's present-day dementia-affected behaviour meets Kidd’s newfound sense of self, we witness an unravelling and reweaving of this mother and son relationship. The family home is ghosted with Kidd’s childhood experiences of gender dysphoria, alongside Stella’s fading memories of family life.

Wanderings embraces the universality of transitioning and the importance of connection while walking the line between humour and pathos, kindness and ferocity, fear and courage. Wanderings champions kinship, acceptance and transformation. A confabulation of autobiography and fiction, this world premiere is created by the multi-award-winning team from The Nest Ensemble – Margi Brown Ash, Zac Callaghan and Leah Mercer.

As part of the Wanderings season, The Nest Ensemble is offering two 90 minute creative workshops that invite participants to playfully navigate and celebrate life’s transitions. In a safe and supported environment, you will participate in facilitated processes that enhance your creativity, develop your reflective practice and nourish your wellbeing. With a focus on inclusivity and building connections, this workshop encourages you to explore the ideas and personalise the themes of the play.

Anyone who purchases a ticket to the show is eligible to register for one of the two workshops. Everyone is welcome and we particularly encourage seniors and members of the LGBTQI+ communities to join us. We recommend you see the play before you attend a workshop. Places are limited, so book early!

These workshops will be hosted by The Nest Ensemble: Margi Brown Ash and Zac Callaghan (writers/actors/facilitators/therapists) and Leah Mercer (writer/director/arts educator).
